Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929) is a contemporary artist from Japan. She uses painting, sculptures, performance art, installations, video and poetry as her art mediums. She is widely known for her use of dots in obsessive repetition. The pumpkin shape has been a staple in her artwork since 1993, with the exhibition Mirror Room (Pumpkin) at the Venice Biennale. For the past 41 years she has been living in a psychiatric hospital, voluntarily.
