Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American Neo-expressionist. He started as a graffiti artist in Manhattan in the 70s, quickly rising to fame from 1980 with solo exhibitions in New York galleries and rapidly evolving into a worldwide renowned artist, collaborating with names such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. The acclaimed artist succumbed to his fame through drug addiction, and after the death of Warhol in 1987 he became more and more reclusive. Despite attempts to get sober, he died of an overdose at age 27 in 1988.
